Ancient port "Tomis" - Cazino area
Constanta may also account for here long history which started since the 6th century B.C. The foundations of the city were laid some 2600 years ago when Greek colonists built the city of Tomis on its present site.
Ancient Tomis (present-day Constanta) has been associated with the legend of Jason and the Argonauts who embarked on a long voyage from Greece to Colchis (Georgia) on the Black Sea coast in search of the Golden Fleece. On their return voyage, they laid anchor on the site were later Tomis was to be built.
The Roman poet Ovid (Ovidius Publius Naso) was exiled to the Romanian coast by Emperor Augustus in 8 A.D. He wrote some of his most important work there, such as Tristia and Ponto, which expresses his sadness fort being far from home. Ovid died in Tomis and in 1887 the Italian artist Ettore Ferrari made a statue for him, what in present days can be seen at Ovidiu square.
In front of Aquarius dive center you will find the underwater remains of ancient port Tomis. Beside fragments of Amphora's you can see parts of the old harbor wall, huge marble blocks
in combination with a exciting marine life...

The (original) ancient chart from port Tomis is made by Cpt. Lt. C. Scarlat in the period 1968 - 69. Cpt. Lt. C. Scarlat (21 May 35 - 23 March 06) was a Romanian pioneer in diving who dedicate his life in investigation of underwater archeology from the Romanian Black sea coast.
